A bushing, also known as plain bearing, is a mechanical element essentially used to reduce friction between rotating shafts and stationary support members. The performance of the bushing relies on the material it is created from. For instance, bushings made from soft metal such as Babbit protect the shaft journals. Bushings are made of different materials, depending upon the application and operation. Bearings and bushings range from a variety of materials; you can find what exactly feeds your need. 

Bronze bearings remain a reverent choice for bushings because of their easy accessibility, expanding their domain into even more operations. A bronze bushing is harder and sustains a greater tensile strength to deform or shatter than those made from plastic or other materials. Much like plastic, it is non-corrosive and withholds long-standing service life. Bronze bushings are the “gold standard” if you want a bushing that can stand the extremities of low speed, high load operations in intensive applications of food processing, automobiles, etc. 

Some of the common application of bronze bearings include turbomachines, such as compressors operating in vulnerable pipelines. Due to low cost and high adaptability, bronze bearings are well suited for sporadic as well as linear motion. Materials of the bearings depend on whether it satisfies the requirements and parameters of lubrication. Copper, an alloy of bronze, has a high aversion to corrosion, making it ideal for aquatic application. The application of the bronze bushings also depends upon the type of oil used and high and low-temperature machinery. 

The only disadvantage of the bronze bushing is the need for frequent lubrication. When lubricated, however, these bushings can resist high loads. There are two major types of bronze bushings:

Cast Bronze Bushings

Cast bronze bushings are created from a definite alloy bar stock that undergoes continuous and centrifugal casting to attain high tensile strength and a final structure. The processes involved in creating cast bronze bushings do not require any powder, helping them attain resistance, greater durability against corrosion. These are highly recommended for operations involving heavy loads. Although these require additional lubrication, these offer longevity. 

 Oil Impregnated Bronze Bushings

These bronze bushings are created by compressing bronze powder particles. The resultant is then placed in a furnace, under a high temperature that enables the joining between the particles without melting them. The oil-impregnated bronze bushings are infused in a vacuum that succumbs to the oil to interconnect the permeability, providing bushings with a higher tolerance. 

Although these bushings are viable in many circumstances, they also possess limitations with respect to the mechanical properties. 

Bronze bearings provide multiple industrial applications. These bushings cancel out noise, absorb shock and reduce the requirements of maintenance. Furthermore, these are erosion-resistant, used in lowered siphons and often used in the application of huge turbines. Bronze is a versatile element, and bushings made out of bronze are hard, incur greater resistance as opposed to plastic or brass, which are softer and easily formidable. Bronze is a factotum element, and so are bronze bushings.
